Q.4) Which of the following illustrate multiple reflection of sound?

1) Megaphones or loudhailers, horns
2) musical instruments such as trumpets and shehanais.

Ans. D

Explanation: USES OF MULTIPLE REFLECTION OF SOUND: Megaphones or loudhailers, horns, musical instruments such as trumpets and shehanais, are all designed to send sound in a particular direction without spreading it in all directions. In these instruments, a tube followed by a conical opening reflects sound successively to guide most of the sound waves from the source in the forward direction towards the audience. Stethoscope is a medical instrument used for listening to sounds produced within the body, chiefly in the heart or lungs. In stethoscopes the sound of the patient’s heartbeat reaches the doctor’s ears by multiple reflection of sound. Generally, the ceilings of concert halls, conference halls and cinema halls are curved so that sound after reflection reaches all corners of the hall.

Q.5) Which of the following actions in our everyday life can be used to illustrate the second law of motion?1) while catching a fast moving cricket ball, a fielder in the ground gradually pulls his hands backwards with the moving ball.
2) In a high jump athletic event, the athletes are made to fall either on a cushioned bed or on a sand bed.
3) A sailor jumping out of a rowing boat.

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

a) 1 and 2
b) 2 and 3
c) 1 and 3
d) All of the above

Ans. A

Explanation: The second law of motion is often seen in action in our everyday life. Have you noticed that while catching a fast moving cricket ball, a fielder in the ground gradually pulls his hands backwards with the moving ball? In doing so, the fielder increases the time during which the high velocity of the moving ball decreases to zero. Thus, the acceleration of the ball is decreased and therefore the impact of catching the fast moving ball. In a high jump athletic event, the athletes are made to fall either on a cushioned bed or on a sand bed. This is to increase the time of the athlete’s fall to stop after making the jump. This decreases the rate of change of momentum and hence the force. The third law of motion can also be illustrated when a sailor jumps out of a rowing boat. As the sailor jumps forward, the force on the boat moves it backwards
