Human Development Index 2019 – UPSC Prelims

  • India ranked 131/189 countries. (Slipped 2 ranks from last year)
  • India scored 0.645 and was placed in medium human development category.

    India ranks lowest among BRICS nations.
  • India’s gross national income (GNI) per capita on the basis of purchasing power parity (PPP) also fell.
  • India related Facts:
    • Between 1990 and 2019, India’s HDI value increased from 0.427 to 0.645, an almost 50 per cent increase, which is an indicator that millions have been lifted out of poverty
  • The HDI is a measure for assessing countries progress in three basic dimensions of human development:
    • a long and healthy life (life expectancy),
    • access to knowledge (education)
    • access to a decent standard of living (Per Capita Income)
  • Countries are ranked based on scale ranging between 0 (low) to 1 (high).
  • For the first time, the UNDP introduced a new metric to reflect the impact caused by each country’s per-capita carbon emissions and its material footprint, which measures the amount of fossil fuels, metals and other resources used to make the goods and services it consumes.
  • In 2019, India ranked fifth for installed solar capacity.
