Daily MCQs – Day 20 – 5th August 2017 – Solutions

These MCQs are based on Today’s Targets given here

Q.1) Consider the following statements about NISAR Satellite:
1. NISAR is a collaborative project of ISRO and NASA.
2. NISAR aims to keep an eye on India border areas and will thus play an important role in India’s security architecture

Choose the correct statements from the option given below:

a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2

Ans. A

Explanation:

  • NISAR stands for NASA ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar Mission
  • Aims to study the hazards and global environmental changes
  • Slated to launched in 2020-21
  • NISAR is a dual frequency (L & S Band) Radar Imaging Satellite. It will be the first radar imaging satellite to use dual frequency.
  • Will be launched in a Sun Synchronous Low -Earth
  • It is designed to observe and take measurements of some of the planet’s most complex processes, including ecosystem disturbances, ice-sheet collapse, and natural hazards such as earth quakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and landslides.
  • The satellite is likely to be launched from India aboard an Indian launch vehicle.
  • Applications:
    • NISAR would provide info about a place more frequently. For Ex. If the present satellite take 23 to 25 days to revisit a particular spot and give the next round of info about it, NISAR would provide the repeat info in two to five days.
    • Objectives:
      • Estimation of soil moisture
      • Agriculture and forest biomass
      • Estimation of glacier
      • Snow and possibility of landslide

Q.2) Consider the following statements about Purchasing Managers Index:
1. Purchasing Managers Index is an indicator of the economic health of the manufacturing sector.
2. Index is created based on indicators like new orders, inventory levels, production, supplier deliveries and employment environment

Choose the correct statements from the option given below:

a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2

Ans. C

Explanation:

  • The Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) is an indicator of the economic health of the manufacturing sector.
  • The PMI is based on five major indicators:
    • New orders,
    • Inventory levels,
    • Production,
    • Supplier deliveries and
    • Employment environment.
  • The purpose of the PMI is to provide information about current business conditions to company decision makers, analysts and purchasing managers.

Q.3) Arrange following Sri Lankan Cities from North to South:
1. Galle
2. Colombo
3. Mannar
4. Jaffna

Choose the correct statements from the option given below:

a) 3, 4, 1, 2
b) 4, 3, 1, 2
c) 3, 4, 2, 1
d) 4, 3, 2, 1

Ans. D

Explanation:

Sri_Lanka

Q.4) Consider the following statements:

1. Petroleum was formed from dead plants while under high pressure and high temperature organisms living in the sea got slowly converted to coal
2. Hydrogen gas obtained from natural gas, is used in the production of fertilisers

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2

Ans. B

Explanation:

Due to natural processes, like flooding, forests got buried under the soil. As more soil deposited over them, they were compressed. The temperature also rose as they sank deeper and deeper. Under high pressure and high temperature, dead plants got slowly converted to coal. As coal contains mainly carbon, the slow process of conversion of dead vegetation into coal is called carbonisation.

Petroleum was formed from organisms living in the sea. As these organisms died, their bodies settled at the bottom of the sea and got covered with layers of sand and clay. Over millions of years, absence of air, high temperature and high pressure transformed the dead organisms into petroleum and natural gas.

Hydrogen gas obtained from natural gas, is used in the production of fertilisers (urea).

Q.5) Consider the following statements:

1. Weeds compete with the crop plants for water, nutrients, space and light and affect the growth of the crop
2. Weedicides are sprayed just before sowing of crops as it helps in killing of weeds and helps in optimum growth of crop

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

a) 1 only
b) 2 only
c) Both 1 and 2
d) Neither 1 nor 2

Ans. A

Explanation:

The removal of weeds is called weeding. Weeding is necessary since weeds compete with the crop plants for water, nutrients, space and light. Thus, they affect the growth of the crop. Some weeds interfere even in harvesting and may be poisonous for animals and human beings. Farmers adopt many ways to remove weeds and control their growth. Tilling before sowing of crops helps in uprooting and killing of weeds, which may then dry up and get mixed with the soil. The best time for the removal of weeds is before they produce flowers and seeds. The weedicides are sprayed during the vegetative growth of weeds before flowering and seed formation.
