India’s 8th Hydrocarbon Producing Basin – UPSC Prelims

  • ONGC Limited has begun crude oil production from Bengal Basin making Bengal basin India‚Äôs eighth producing basin.
  • Other basins are:
    1. Godavari (KG),
    2. Mumbai Offshore,
    3. Assam Shelf,
    4. Rajasthan,
    5. Cauvery,
    6. Assam-Arakan Fold Belt and
    7. Cambay.
  • According to Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, there are 26 sedimentary basins in India. Of these, 16 are onland basins, 7 located both onland and offshore and 3 completely offshore.
