Gender Inequality Index (GII) 2020 – UPSC Prelims

  • The Gender Inequality Index presents a composite measure of gender inequality using three dimensions:
    • Reproductive health,
    • Empowerment and
    • The labour market.
  •  In GII, India is at 123 rank. Last year, it was ranked 122 out of 162 countries.
  • It reflects inequality in achievements between women and men.
  • The health dimension is measured by the maternal mortality ratio and the adolescent fertility rate.
  • The empowerment dimension is measured by the share of parliamentary seats held by each gender, and by secondary and higher education attainment levels.
  • The labour dimension is measured by women’s participation in the workforce.
