Paradip Port – UPSC Prelims

  • Cabinet approved a project for deepening, optimising and development of Paradip Port.
  • Project would help in decongesting the port, reducing sea freight, thereby making coal imports cheaper and creating jobs.
  • It is a  Major Port under Government of India and administered under the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963.
  • It was commissioned in 1966 as a mono commodity port for export of iron ore.
  • It is a natural, deep-water port on the East coast of India in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha. It is situated at confluence of the Mahanadi river and the Bay of Bengal.
  • Other Major ports are Kandla, Mumbai JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, and Tuticorin.
  • Earlier this year, Union Cabinet has given ‘in-Principal’ approval for setting up of 13th Major Port at Vadhavan.
