Objectives:

To provide forecasts and services based on the continuous observation of oceans.

To develop technologies and exploratory surveys for the sustainable harnessing of oceanic resources (both living and non-living).

To promote front-ranking research in ocean sciences.

Schemes has seven sub schemes for various verticals.

Sub schemes are implemented by various autonomous institutes attached to Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Significance:

Extensive research and technology development activities under the scheme would augment the capacity building of the nation in the oceanographic field at the international level.

Present decade has been declared as the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development by the United Nations (UN). Hence, the continuation of the scheme would strengthen India’s stand in the global oceanographic research and technology development.
