What is Maternal Mortality?
According to WHO, Maternal Mortality is death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.
What is Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR)?
Maternal Mortality Rate is defined as number of maternal deaths during a given time per 100,000 live births during the same time.
Status of MMR in India:
  • India’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR) has improved to 103 in 2017-19, from 113 in 2016-18, an 8.8% decline.
  • The country has been witnessing a progressive reduction in the MMR from
    • 130 in 2014-16
    • 122 in 2015-17
    • 113 in 2016-18
    • 103 in 2017-19
