Steps taken for Sports Development by Indian Government – UPSC GS1

  • Khelo India programme was launched by the government to develop a sporting culture at the grassroots level.
    The government has also announced that it would launch National Sports Talent Identification and Development Portal shortly.
  • Sports ministry is also planning to introduce sports as a compulsory subject in schools
  • Mission Olympics 2024 : NITI Aayog has devised a short-term and medium-to-long term action plan to help India achieve 50 medals in 2024 summer Olympics
  • Target Olympic Podium Scheme: Its objective is to identify and support potential medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games
  • National Sports Talent Search Portal: A web portal to unearth sporting talent from every nook and corner of the country.
    Kiren Rijiju Committee: To ensure that the performance of the Indian athletes is optimized in Olympics and other multidisciplinary events.
    • For Tokyo Games 2020:  Committee would seek to provide all possible support to potential and qualified athletes. It would also facilitate smooth logistical arrangements for participation of Indian athletes
    • For Paris Games 2024:  The aim of committee would be to chart out a road-map for preparation and to continuously review and suggest course correction whenever required.
