  • It leads international efforts to defeat hunger

  • In theory, acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy
  • FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, and helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture,  forestry and fisheries practices, ensuring good nutrition and food security for all.
  • India is a member of FAO.

    • World State of Forest Report
    • State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture(SOFIA).
    • State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI), etc
  • Treaty: FAO is the depository body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

    • Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems(GIAHS).
    • Codex Alimentarius Commission or CAC
    • Tree Cities of the World programme among others.
