  • Why in news? Won the ‘India Biodiversity Award 2016’
  • Won prize for “Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme” (urban citizens contribute money to protect hornbill nests around Pakke Tiger Reserve)

  • The awards recognise the contribution of a range of stakeholders towards the conservation of biodiversity
  • It is given in four categories viz.
    1. Conservation of Threatened Species,
    2. Sustainable use of biological resources,
    3. Successful models for access and benefit sharing and
    4. Biodiversity Management Committees
  • It is joint initiative of
    1. the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC),
    2. National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) and
    3. United Nations Development programme (UNDP).
